Finals

Brand Values

Tabasco is a hot sauce that is made from Tabasco peppers, vinegar and salt. Since its Beginnings in 1868 very little has changed about the product. The design of the bottle has been unchanged as well as the recipe, the bottles are modeled after the cologne bottles that were used in the first batches in 1868.
One notable change about the product would be the shift from growing the peppers on Avery Island to Central and South America, this was to keep up with the production demands of the sauce.
The peppers are grown and picked by hand, they are then mashed with the salt and vinegar and aged in oak barrels that have been previously used for Jack Daniel’s Whiskey. The main flavour comes from this aging process rather than having a fancy recipe.
Tabasco has a few other products they produce with different flavours of their sauce. They also have a selection of Tabasco Chocolate.
Tabasco hot sauce is a product that is loved all around the world and has always been there, the product has appeared in various different movies and TV shows as well.

Rational

My brand for this project in Tabasco hot sauce, I choose to design a firebird / Phoenix as it illustrates the hotness of the sauce. Since the brand has a very simple design and has not changed since the company began I choose a realistic gritty style in order to give the brand some more life and interest. I choose to base my design off a family of birds called Antbirds which originate from Central and South America, this choice was made because the chilli’s for Tabasco are grown in these areas. I choose deep reds as the base of my colour pallet as it is the colour of the sauce, I also used greens as my background colour as it is a contrasting colour to the redish colours I used for my character so that it would make the character pop.

Colour Pallets
I need to start thinking about the colour pallets I want to use for my finals, I started by grabbing colours out of reference images.

I then garbed the colour I liked and thought would work the best from these colour pallets to create a Pallet that I will try to stick to for my finals. It has a range of red to yellow to cover all the colours in fire, then some green and greeny blue to contrast with those reds and yellows to make the character stand out, then a muted brown to hopefully not make my finals to saturated.

Prop
For my secondary image I wasn't sure what I wanted to emphasize my design but after talking with one of my lecturers they said it would be just as effective as using the product as the prop so ive decided to go with number 3.

AntBirds
After developing some more ideas I decided that I liked the smaller birds better and thought they suited the brand values better, plus the eagles and hawks were getting a mixed message. I have decided to choose Antbirds to base my character off as they are a family of small birds that come from south and central america, plus one of the species is named fire-eyes so I think it is very fitting.

After Feedback
My feedback from class was that no-one knew what my product the characters are for so I am going to have to come from a different approach. I got feedback that I should do something that relates to hot sauce more e.g something on fire like a Phoenix. Because the design of the product is very simple I wanted to design something gritty and exciting to lift the interest of the brand. I grabbed some reference of Phoenix's and Hawks to draw from.

I was thinking I could use Birds of Paradise as reference since they have such interesting shapes and feathers.

Thumbnail Development
I want to develop A character that encapsulates the values of Tabasco Sauce, these values would have to be:
  • Enduring
  • Unchanged
  • Traditional
  • Simple
  • Spicy
  • Organic
Out of my thumbnails I think that the anthropomorphic South American animals could work for my brand as it encapsulates the area in which the chili peppers are grown but also these South American animals have been surviving in the jungle for thousands of years without changing which goes with my brand values, also they get the essence of natural which also goes with my brand values.

Another thumbnail idea I had that could work was the ancient Aztec character as they were very traditional and unchanged by other societies, They were the civilization of South America far before anyone else and some of their buildings are still enduring today like Machu Picchu so this idea works with my brand values as-well.

I feel like the purely animal or insect thumbnails are not as strong and I don't think I could design such a strong character if I was doing a humanoid structure. For the style of design I think I want to design something more realistic than stylized as I think it would fit better with my Brand Values and also I am more interested in a realistic approach to design than a cartoony one.
